Sally Dunn is your typical eight-year-old in a not-so-typical world - one where kids rule and adults get schooled. It's fun to be in charge, but it's never easy. When Sally goes shopping, she needs to buy the right toys to make her whole family happy (and her parents never seem to like her choices). When Sally goes driving, she needs to try her best to not bump the other kids too hard. And she makes sure respects everyone else’s choice of pets, whether they be a tiny little dog or a huge elephant. All of this becomes more difficult when Sally gets a Party Duty letter and is forced to entertain the entire town. Even with her friends by her side, it’s going to be difficult when the mayor seems to have it out for her in this enticing adventure where the people are Growing Around.

I bought the book for no other reason, but for who wrote it. And after reading the other reviews here, I just became too curious! I just couldn't help myself! I had to see for myself if a book written by Enter actually contained a lot of the problems that he'd gladly chastise others for.I will say, that I did get some entertainment out of it. But it's only because I knew who wrote it. There's a lot of delicious hypocrisy to be had here! I can't say if children would enjoy it, or if people that don't know Enter would enjoy it, but I enjoyed it.
Yes, the other people here are not exaggerating about the abusive stuff. There's a lot of it! Sally is very unpleasant and vindictive. I, for the life of me, can't figure out why she is so mean and spiteful to her mom, and yet, so sugary sweet to her father with no personality.
The pacing is unlike anything I've ever read before! It moves around way too fast, but also at a snail's pace. There's a serious lack of detail in this book in some areas, and a lot of detail in others. The appearances of the characters aren't really described. Heck, they're lucky if they even get a name! Maybe their clothing will be described at times, but that's about it! And characters jump around too much. It's hard for me to get a picture in my head, when I can't keep track of the location because the characters keep moving around without me realizing it. Sometimes time jumps ahead without me realizing it. With all that I just said, you'd think that the book goes by quickly and is fast-paced. It's not. I mean, it takes until page 53 for Sally to finally get the letter informing her that she has "Party Duty." Books usually tend to be either 1) short on details and fast-paced, or 2) long on details and slow-paced. This doesn't fit in any of those categories. It honestly is unlike anything I've read before!
The worldbuilding problems have been beaten to death. All I'll say, is that to me, it seems like a very unpleasant universe that I would not want to live in.
I will give credit where it's due. I do like some of the locations. Some of them are actually pretty creative. Having a spiral staircase with a giant lava lamp in the center is pretty awesome, for example!

I ordered the book and found it quite interesting. The story centers around an imagintive world run by children with an interesting town were kids ride ponies, ice cream and candy are the main course of dinner and houses can be hollowed out trees. The main character Sally and her family are very fun and have sweet moments were the dad Robert will dress up like princess and garden tulips with his daughter and doesn't get bother by these girly things as long as keeps Sally happy. Linda is Sally's mother and seems like "the troubled child"-or adult as she is failing her grades at school-yes this is a world run by kids so the adults go to school, deal with it! But Linda isn't a bad person, she just doesn't believe she has a very good imagination and doubts herself. Sally intends to help her mother's failing grades but she is assigned party duty, which is a big deal in this world and not throwing one leads to grave consequences, like wedgies. Timmy is Sally's brother and runs a Lemonade Stand which is like a restaurant in this world and acts like a typical young boy but he's in the background most of the time, having a few scenes with Sally but didn't really shine that much through out the story. Talula is a miserable selfish brat that I wanna smack, and she's the mayor of Sally's town-lovely. The book is an easy read with sentences being spaced out nicely so it's less intimating for a child who is probably scared off by books with lots of words in it and there is nothing offensive about this cute story. The story does use the word "sucks" in a few places but it's very rare and unless you're someone that has a real problem with kids reading "sucks" in a book, even though both kids and adults use that word all the time, then it's probably not a big deal. It's cute, it's fun and charming and it's worth reading for both kids and adults. )
Dystopian. As I was reading this book, that was the word that kept coming to mind dystopian. This is not a complaint, just to be clear. There's not a whole lot of background given--one is not bogged down with exposition--so I was left to wonder how the world ended up this way. Or if the world was always this way somehow. I found myself wondering why the children were in charge--does something happen to the adult brain that makes them incapable of taking care of themselves? Linda and Robbie (Sally's parents) seem more or less on the ball, and they even dispense some good parent-y advice at times.
Other questions that occurred to me Where are the parents' parents? Do adults not live long enough to be grandparents in this world? Considering the food described and how little of it seems nutritious, I could believe it! One of the characters has a lot of siblings, so how is that handled with children in charge? And do gay or single adults just have no one to care for them, or do they get adopted by parentless children?
Anyway, that's just me over-thinking (as I'm wont to do)... The story over-all is interesting, and I don't regret reading it. I was frustrated a bit with how Sally treated her mother (who seems to have some kind of imagination disability) but the resolution of that was satisfying. As a stand alone piece, it reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode. And there's a moral about becoming involved in your local government, so that's good.
If one has a visceral disgust for descriptions of food ending up in hair and on faces, this book isn't for you. If one is sensitive to emotional abuse, this might not be for you (Sally is, unsurprisingly, not a great parent to her parents). If one is sensitive to bullying, proceed with caution. If those things aren't deal-breakers, it's worth a read if the premise interests you.
